Bastrop County

Bastrop County came into existence in 1836, covering some 890 square miles of Central Texas prime real estate. Travis, Lee, Fayette, and Caldwell County lines border Bastrop County. The City of Bastrop is the county seat and commercial center of Bastrop County.

Figures from the U. S. Census Bureau show Bastrop County’s population grew more than 50 percent from 1990 to 2000 – from 38,263 to 57,733. The growth continued from April 2000 to July 2003, when the county’s population rose 16.2 percent to 67,077 residents, making Bastrop the 9th fastest growing county in the state and 36th in the country. More recent studies have shown that Bastrop is currently the 6th fastest growing county and is gaining steam.

  • Hunter’s Crossing, a mixed-use development on Highway 71, is the site of Home Depot, Chili’s Restaurant, a retail strip center, and a new residential development that will include 465 homes.
  • Pecan Crossing is a 148-acre mixed use development on Highway 71 at Hwy 304 that will offer 1,000,000 square feet of retail space, restaurants, and other activities.
  • A new family entertainment complex, Chestnut Square Family Entertainment Center, located at Loop 150 and Highway 95, opened in 2003 with a 4-screen theater with stadium seating, a 16 lane bowling alley, high-tech arcade, nine-table billiard parlor, a food court, and banquet facilities.
  • Bastrop Village, a 750-acre real estate project south of Texas 71 that straddles County Road 20, plans to build up to 985 real estate homes.
  • The Colony, an existing gated community located just north of Hwy 71 between FM 1209 and FM 969, plans to build another 4,000 homes.
  • Woodbine Development Corp of Dallas is developing a Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa that includes a 500-room hotel, equestrian trails and two golf courses to be located on 600 acres near McKinney Roughs Nature Park north of Hwy 71. This new Hyatt will bring many Austin business associates to discover the beautiful Bastrop real estate area. It will also bring the Austin real estate market to the county, while the Hyatt is projecting to bring at least 400,000 new tourists into the area. The Hyatt Resort and Spa is an enormous corporation and we are honored to be a part of their plans!

Bastrop County boasts a new industrial park in Bastrop, location on a four-lane highway between Austin and Houston and proximity to the Austin airport. Elgin is building a network of wireless hotspots. The county also has several key components of the region's biosciences industry, including the M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center, University of Texas Science Park-Department of Veterinary Sciences and a growing number of life sciences companies located in the county. State tax revenues have risen dramatically and consistently since 1990, and are expected to rise as more new businesses move into the area.
